I have been a full-time private tutor for eight years and I am enthusiastic about teaching. I can provide lessons in electric, acoustic and bass guitar, and tuition in GCSE and A-Level Music. I am currently a PhD student at Newcastle University, researching improvised music and occluded knowledge. I achieved a distinction for a M(Music) and First Class Honours for a BA in Music, both from Newcastle University.
I'm a versatile teacher and can teach many styles of popular music, specialising in post-punk/indie, prog/psychedelia, rock, jazz/blues, and folk/fingerstyle. I have an excellent understanding of music theory and can teach both classical and popular theory to a high level.
As a professional musician I have performed at national music festivals including Latitude, secret Garden Party, Green Man, and Tusk, and at prestigious venues such as the Alexandra Palace and the Electric Ballroom. I have recorded with Maverick Sabre and performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra. I have supported Wavves, Focus and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
I am a highly experienced tutor and have worked as an instrumental teacher at Newcastle University and the Rock Project, Newcastle. I also currently work as a support Lecturer in music performance at Newcastle University, a position I have held for 3 years. I have had additional experience in education as a teaching assistant for Norfolk Adult Education, and an exams invigilator at a Newcastle School.
I am directed by the students, teaching what they want to learn, I believe that the best way to learn and succeed is when a student sets their own goals. I have a 100% pass rate at all instrumental grades with Rockschool, Trinity Rock and Pop, and RGT exam boards, should a student wish to pursue the graded route. I also have my own personal syllabus (of 200+ pieces in a wide variety of styles) that runs parallel to the exam boards and can offer a well-structured and progressive approach to instrumental learning, should a student wish to learn something more specialised than exam boards can provide (fingerstyle playing, for example), or should the exam-grade system not suite a student's learning style.
