I am a 2nd year medical student at Oxford University (highest first year medicine score) and have vast experience of the medical application process as well as subject knowledge at GCSE (10 9s) and IB/A level standard (44 points, scoring the maximum in all subjects). Achieving in the top 0.1% of scorers in the UCAT with a score of 3190, and achieving 8.6 6.9 3A in my BMAT allowed to me secure all medical school offers at Oxford, Imperial, KCL and Bristol, aided by personal statement and interview expertise. Not only this, but I have received over 18 academic awards throughout my school life, ranging from continued excellence in Sciences and Maths as well as consistently topping the year or scoring in the top 3 in mock examinations.
I have over 120 hours of tutoring experience. I have teaching experience at many levels. This includes teaching 3 students at 11+ level, ensuring they reached their 1st choice secondary school. This taught me patience and the communication and empathy skills to tackle teaching a student from various perspectives. I used this when teaching with the Mentoring society at my school, teaching a student GCSE Chemistry and Biology, tailoring to his needs and allowing him to increase his knowledge and application of knowledge. Moving to IB tutoring, I peer mentored 2 students in Chemistry to supplement content covered and again tackle it at a different perspective to lessons. Finally, I have offered copious amounts of personal statement and interview advice as well as numerous tutoring sessions on UCAT recently.
I think that the most important things in tutoring are patience and flexibility, which together make a comfortable environment where the session is seen as interactive and practical rather than a lecture. I believe that every child needs a unique way of teaching and the key to tutoring is being able to find the perspective that the student feels easiest. This way, the student can receive the knowledge more efficiently, making answering questions and performing well much easier. Mixed with empathy and aforementioned patience, I believe that I can tailor my teaching style to each student and work with their parents to make a successful outcome.
