Ms Akiko is a fantastic teacher! Although I am an advanced learner, there have been gaps in my knowledge that she is happy to teach me and it has been to my great benefit. She is also very flexible with her scheduling, able to tailor to my needs of A-Level Japanese tutoring as well as preparation for the JLPT.

Akiko has been absolutely fantastic with helping me to improve my pronunciation and speaking skills in our lessons so far. My wife and I are going to Japan on holiday next month and I really wanted to be able to help more with speaking while we are there (she is much more proficient than me, having lived in Tokyo for a year previously).

Akiko is extremely friendly and very encouraging and has also given me lots of cultural tips and advice for while we are there too. She has been great with understanding what level I am at from my own individual study and helping to correct any mistakes or misunderstandings I have developed as a result. I'm looking forward to the remaining lessons we have before I head off to Japan at the end of October!

I'm enjoying my lessons with Akiko so far and I am finding the lessons clear and easy to follow. As well as learning language we have talked about travelling tips and things to know before we visit, which has been very helpful.

Excellent tutor! Very friendly, informative and explains things clearly

Akiko is a good teacher with a lot of knowledge (as she is a native speaker) that's very helpful to me as a beginner. I have never had a Japanese tutor before but I figured I would give it a go for the new year and I've really enjoyed my experience so far. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to start learning Japanese.

I have never attempted to learn a language before so I was nervous to try it out but after completing my first 4 lessons with Akiko, I am very happy with how it is going and it has got me looking forward learning more in the future. I have been self-learning Japanese on and off for a couple of years. I decided in order to progress further I would need to engage with a community of practice. I stumbled across First Tutors and that is where I met Akiko sensei. I can honestly say that my passion to learn has become even more rewarding from having regular tuition from Akiko. The most important component of all is that Akiko sensei is patient and enthusiastic about teaching. I am looking forward to developing my Japanese and learning more about Japan and it’s rich culture.

Akiko is just lovely, very friendly and dedicated to her students.
It's still early days in my lessons, but I can already tell that she tries very hard to understand the needs of her students. She's very keen to help me hit the goals I have set out for myself and is happy to explain points in more detail when I have questions as well as point out additional vocabulary I can note down.
Akiko is always on time for our zoom calls and has a professional set up that works very well for online tutoring.

こんにちは！I'm currently a university student and I have been planning to study and work in Japan in the near future. Akiko-sensei is a fantastic tutor, she incorporates her experience and knowledge of Japan into our lessons, which bring insight into what it's like living and working in Japan; and I am very thankful for it! Although I have one hour sessions weekly with Akiko-sensei, those single hours have helped me a lot in improving my reading, speaking and writing skills. All in all, would definitely recommend Akiko-sensei!

I started to learn beginners Japanese to help with my work, and Akiko ensured our lessons were tailored to what I wanted to achieve. We focused on formal Japanese and Akiko always gives great explanations of appropriate language for formal or casual situations.

I've been having lessons with Akiko-sensei for a month now and she has been an excellent teacher. She introduces new and topical vocabulary in each lesson which has really enriched my studies. Akiko Sensei is an excellent teacher.

I started my journey in Japanese by as much self-teaching as possible and found that my pronunciation was a little bit poor and my speaking-skills were non-existent so I wanted to get a tutor to develop these skills. After finding Akiko Sensei on this website I was very happy with her teaching style and she is very approachable and knowledgeable. And most importantly, we have a fun lesson!

I can ask her any questions as I study mid-week and she is very flexible with her study times and when the next lesson will take place.

I would highly recommend Akiko Sensei and will be learning Japanese with her for a long time!

I've been working with Akiko-sensei for almost a month now and it has been absolutely fabulous! She has completely personalized the learning experience for me and is incredibly patient when it comes to words or concepts I don't understand. She's incredibly approachable and makes me feel comfortable with Japanese despite me being nervous about mispronouncing things. Overall, I would highly recommend Akiko to anyone interested in learning Japanese!

I've never had a tutor before, so had no idea what to expect. Also, the learning is remote of course (due to the current coronavirus situation). However, the lessons are very good. Mostly this is because Akiko is friendly and patient and she is, frankly, a very good teacher. I have only had 3 lessons with her so far, but imagine that I will have many more in the future. In particular, she is brilliant at explaining the subtleties of Japanese culture and language. Already, I think I'm starting to make progress, even after so few lessons.

Akiko is an excellent tutor. She is very professional and balances the lessons well by discussing aspects of Japanese culture as well teaching grammar , pronunciation etc. I have found the textbook she recommended to be useful too.

Akiko-san is incredibly friendly with a lot of energy and is a joy to learn from! I started with her as a complete beginner and she has made it seem like a much less daunting task. My brother and I have been taking lessons with Akiko for ~3 months now and they have been excellent. The lessons are fun and also cover Japanese culture and nuances as well as language.

I was looking for a Japanese tutor to help me to learn some of the language prior to my visit to Japan in May 2020.

I have had two sessions with Akiko-san and they have been an absolute pleasure. Each session is friendly, informative, and encouraging. Akiko-san takes her time to get to know each student and individualises the sessions accordingly.

Sessions with Akiko-san have given me the understanding needed to study the language in my own time.

For anyone who is interested in learning Japanese I would recommend Akiko-san without any reservation.

Sensei is a passionate teacher with an energetic and engaging teaching style. Her obvious love of teaching shines through in her lessons and truly inspires you to push yourself as hard as you can. Her gentle encouragment and positive reinforcement of success, are a great boon to an almost complete beginner like me. At no point have I ever felt intimidated by the lessons, as sensei patiently breaks down each section and guides you through it.
All in all I would recommend Sensei as a tutor to anyone, you couldn't ask for a better guide through the pitfalls of learning the Japanese language. I feel like I have learned more in the 4 weeks of lessons I've had with her, than I did in the 4 months of personal study I tried.

I am really enjoying my Japanese tuition. It is fun to learn and discuss everything great about Japan whilst learning. Any questions I have are always answered clearly.

Akiko is a really enthusiastic teacher, and really encouraging to students. I've made a lot of progress in a few lessons, and learned a lot much faster than I would have working on my own. She has a great understanding of language, and she is great at explaining the finer points of grammar that can be difficult to understand.

Akiko sensei has been very helpful and informative during my few tutoring sessions as she helped me with what I saw as a newer approach of pronouncing words as it is a new language.
I believe she has the ability to help me reach my linguistic goals in the Japanese language.

I wanted to learn some Japanese from a native speaker as I didn't want an anglicised version so decided to go with Akiko. I am very pleased with my lessons. Akiko is enthusiastic and positive. It takes a little while to tune in to her japanese accent but I think this is very common because of the very different syllable set the language uses. Probably a better match to beginners and/or those who like a structured approach than those looking for more advanced , freeform conversations.

Not only does she help with learning a language she also additionally helps you understand culture, geography and history which are all vitally important.

I absolutely loved my first leason and i cant wait for more. We went straight into hirigana and greetings. Akiko went through how to pronounce the words and asked me to repeat after her which was a great way to pick up what i needed to study more after class. I love the book that i purchased from her as it is a really good guide to help gradual progression. Akiko is really lovely and she is very easy to talk to.i would 100% recommend!

Very pleased with the lessons.
They are easy to follow and understand, making them very enjoyable to partake in.
The lessons are well paced as to not overwhelm you with information, making it easier to remember and review the lesson.
Overall I am very happy and can't wait for the next lesson.

Currently, I have had 3 lessons with Akiko, which have been super easy to organise!
At the moment, I'm learning the basic's - which is a good start for me! Seen as most of my knowledge is from watching anime. (Not enough to hold a conversation that's for sure!)
One of the thing's I really like about learning Japanese with Akiko, is that when I do something well, she praises me… Which I know sounds silly, but it helps motivate me to keep doing well!
Another thing I should point out is that she uses Japanese most of the time to speak to me - Which is scary at times, but it helps me remember phrases better ^-^
Akiko is super friendly, and helpful when I ask questions on thing's I am unsure on. Therefore I don't have to hold back on asking questions!

I have now had a few lessons with Akiko and I can't express how much she has already helped me progress my Japanese! We work together with a Japanese textbook via Skype and the lessons are challenging but always explained in detail and linked to previous lessons. I am learning my kana so quickly, along with new vocabulary and also grammar! Just fantastic! Not to mention she is really lovely, enthusiastic and encouraging! I always look forward to my lessons.

I hope to continue my Japanese lessons with Akiko for as long as I can!

Akiko is a fantastic tutor. She really listens to what your needs are and helps accordingly. Akiko also pushes your learning and gets you comfortable sounding out phases and speaking the language. I love the lessons that I have with her and feel my Japanese is getting stronger after every lesson.

I came into Akiko Sensei lessons as a novice so I was worried I would feel overwhelmed but Akiko has been great she's listened to my worries, answered my questions and has a lot of patience.

Akiko is a very pleasant teacher to work with, very attentive in teaching specific areas, is able to accomte the hours i have available to learn, very hospitable which makes me feel at ease when learning a subject that i felt was a little daunting to begin with, great teacher!

Akiko san is a very friendly teacher and very good at noticing my strengths and weaknesses to help me concentrate on the areas I want to focus on and improve on. Her explanations are easy to understand and her lessons are fun!

I started learning Japanese from Akiko-Sensei a month ago, as part of my preparation for my departure to Japan next year. I have found her teaching style to be relaxed and flexible and this has helped in my learning. She is very good at explaining difficult concepts and is quick to give appraisal, instilling confidence in your delivery of Japanese. She has also told me a lot about living in Japan and what to expect, which has been an added bonus on top of her great lessons! Akiko is just the tutor that I was looking for; her classes are well structured, packed little culture notes and other fun, relevant examples that a book alone just doesn't expose you to or keep you engaged. Akiko is a very dedicated teacher. She is always well prepared prior to the teaching, and she utilises a wide range of teaching aids, from printouts of picture to aid the process of learning. She is a very understanding and patient teacher, and can accommte for difficulties faces when learning japanese. During language practice, she gives very constructive feedback on how to improve on your japanese language, and can keep track of the entire learning progress. She is well versed in the language, and always make the whole session enjoyable. I would strongly recommend Akiko as Japanese tutor, for anyone who is new towards Japanese language

Whilst I only learnt with her for a short time, sadly other academic commitments took precedence, I found her demeanour very professional and she worked very diligently to create and adapt a lesson plan to my needs. I'm sure had my time commitments not been so stringent I would have gone on to enjoy many more lessons studying with her.

Hi Akiko,

I thought I should tell you the reason why I didn't want to continue the Japanese lessons.

Even though I had sent you an e-mail entirely in Japanese, and had lived in Japan for half a year and studied Japanese for two and a half years (now reaching intermediate level) you wanted to start off with the basics (what is your name, where do you live, counting to 20 etc.) I didn't feel that lessons like that would be a constructive use of my time.

Also, I'm not aware if you've had any experience teaching Japanese to someone at my level, but I've realised it can be more difficult than teaching basic Japanese. If you haven't had any experience with this level of teaching, perhaps it would be better to not mention on this website that you can provide university-level teaching.
