I am a full-time tutor, living in London and originally from Gloucestershire, England. I studied Mathematics at the University of Oxford, Keble College and gained a First Class Masters degree.
Personally, I enjoy tutoring because I find it very satisfying when I am able help a tricky topic to 'click' in the mind of my student, and turn a subject that may have previously been a weakness into one that they can start to enjoy, ultimately achieving results that makes them proud.
My teaching experience over the past 10 years covers a wide range of ages and abilities, and I tailor my approach to fit the student's confidence and working style, while trying to make our sessions enjoyable and engaging. Whether it is preparing students for entry tests (from secondary schools to Oxbridge) or helping in their preparation for exams, I help students reach their potential by patiently going through example questions, filling knowledge gaps and then making sure that they are able to independently show that they have a solid understanding of the material.
Oxbridge preparation
Mentoring students who are applying to study maths, physics, engineering or computer science. This includes personal statement advice, admission test practice and mock interviews. I also have attended many school days in the UK and France to provide mock interviews and tutorials for students applying in these subjects.
Entry tests
I have helped prepare students for 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry tests, across Maths, English, Reasoning (verbal and non-verbal) and - where applicable - science and interview preparation. Students' abilities range from those who have very low confidence in themselves, to very high achievers who need to be stretched and challenged. In the Summer of 2019, I also devised an taught a month-long course in China, aiming to improve the abilities (both in terms of entry test results and language) at the 11+ level, and have been invited to re-run the course next year. I am currently writing a book of tips and tricks for the 11+ maths entry tests.
Exams
Exam preparation assistance at GCSE and A-level age range across several different exam boards (including IB). Subjects covered include Maths, Physics, Economics and Science.
My teaching style is patient and encouraging, making sure that more introverted students are not afraid to ask questions or make mistakes. But I also encourage my students to stretch themselves, and focus on areas where they are less confident, to make sure they are achieving the best that they can. When the goal is an entry test, I believe that practice is key, as there are always tips and tricks that can be learned.
