Alex is a working freelance pianist, tutor and composer. He has been fully immersed in the world of music since his own A-Level education. Having first picked up a keyboard at the age of 7, he has gone on to play for ensembles throughout the UK, and also pursues his own compositional and arranging projects.
After completing A-Level Music with an A grade, Alex went on to complete a degree in Music at the Reid School of Music at the University of Edinburgh. Here he focussed mainly on composition, studying with Peter Nelson and Stuart McRae, but also excelled in modules based on theory, aural and essay tests.
Alex has received acclaim and awards for his compositional and aural abilities. These include winning the 2014 Emre Araci and the 2016 Edinburgh University Brass Band Composition Competitions.
Beyond 2 years of online tutoring, Alex also has experience in:
1-to-1 in-person tutoring in A-Level Music Composition and Theory:
He has tutored a range of students who have required assistance in all areas of their A-Level Music programme, including composition, set works, essay questions, listening questions and aural skills.
Classroom experience in tutoring GCSE and A-Level Music:
For 3 years, Alex worked closely with the music department of a large high school and offered support to GCSE and A-Level students here. He delivered 1-to-1 support with compositions, performance recordings and wider classroom tutorials in A-Level set works.
Music is all about confidence, and taking written exams in the subject is no exception. Alex’s sessions are designed to give all his tutees the confidence they need with all the tools required to achieve the best grades possible.
As music is such a broad subject, every session that Alex delivers is driven by his tutees, so that he can focus on which specific aspect of the syllabus they require his guidance with. His sessions are informal and light-hearted, to put his students at ease and encourage their creative flare.
