I trained as a research student and tutor at Oxford, and I am now using my experience to pursue creative methods of education outside of academia. Having always taught one-on-one or in small groups, I am able to tailor my teaching approach to the student, whatever their age or background.
I have two areas of specialism. The first is the creative arts in their historical context – I have a background in musical culture and history, but I also teach English Literature, creative writing, and the humanities more broadly. The second is academic skills such as writing and structuring essays, arguing and debate, presenting and public speaking, and research skills.
I have five and a half years' experience teaching undergraduate Music courses at the University of Oxford, first as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at New College (2013-2014) and then as Lecturer in Music at St Catherine's College (2014-2019). I have an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, conferred through Oxford in 2016.
I have taught primarily within the Oxford tutorial system, which involves small group sizes, in-depth discussions, and detailed feedback on specific assignments. My tutoring roles also involved conducting admissions interviews and providing access and outreach talks for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
My areas of specialism are the theory and analysis of music of the long eighteenth century, and historical musicology (pop and classical) of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I have also provided music tuition in other capacities: keyboard to younger children, and A level music to teenagers.
I teach at all levels and to all ages, but my approach is informed by my experience in the Oxford tutorial system. This means that I prefer to teach holistically, teaching writing and study skills more broadly, and supporting personal academic development, in addition to teaching a syllabus. Whatever a student's ability or background, I am committed to understanding and supporting their learning aims.
