Alexis

I am a qualified Classics teacher and have worked in both maintained and independent schools as well as the British Museum where I was responsible for cataloguing Roman republican coins.
I studied Ancient History at King's College London and hold a BA (hons) and MA in the subject and have studied early Roman republican history, Augustan propaganda, Byzantium history, Classical Athenian democracy and Aristophanes as well as Pre-Socratic philosophy and Hippocrates. I have a PGCE in Classics. I also have a GCSE and A level in Latin as well as Classics and Ancient History. I have been a qualified teacher for 14 years.

Tutoring Experience

I hold QTS and a PGCE in Classics and have been a qualified teacher for 14 years. I have worked in two state Grammar Schools in Medway teaching Classics and Latin from years 7-13, this includes OCR GCSE Latin, OCR A level Latin and IB Latin, as well as OCR GCSE and A Level Classics.
I have been in charge of year 13 Classics for 14 years, teaching the Homeric epics, Aeneid, Greek tragedy and Roman republican politics.
I have also been Head of Classics at a boarding school in Yorkshire responsible for teaching years 7-11 and GCSE Latin and Classics and Head of Classics in a private grammar school, responsible for teaching Latin and classics from years 7-13.
I am also familiar with Latin and Greek Common Entrance and Scholarship Greek and Latin, having been Head of Latin and Classics in a prep school and have taught entrance level Latin and Greek for boys wanting to go to Eton.
I have also taught other subjects such as KS3 and KS4 history; English literature and language GCSE for about 12 years, and English IB and RS for 10 years and have recently taught the new AQA GCSE course for RS for year 10 and year 11 students. I have also been in charge of year 10 history and the New Testament studies for year 13 RS.
I am familiar with new exam specifications for the above subjects and through private tutoring have taught a variety of set texts for the new OCR Latin GCSE and GCE specification, as well as a variety of modules for the new OCR Classics qualification.

Tutoring Approach

I believe in simplifying Latin and Greek grammar so as to become confident translators of the most difficult grammatical elements such as indirect statements and participles.
Past papers are also key to success and the more practice you have, the better you become.
I have also been an OCR examiner for A level Classics and am familiar with the key concepts for this paper which has tailored my teaching for A level Classics.
I am very passionate about my subject and this approach encourages success in my students.
