Home Tuition for Maths and Physics in Malvern

Hi, I'm Amadeus! I am a part time tutor and run an education start-up which produces free education resources, primarily videos. Although I trained as a Doctor at Cambridge University, and hold an MA (Hons) in Zoology, my passion for teaching lead me to transition to education full time.

I have a professional tutoring certificate from the the tutoring standards agency and an up to date enhanced DBS certificate.

Tutoring Experience

I have now taught for over 8000 hours, ranging from private tutees, to holiday revision seminars, to medical students on hospital wards. The reason teaching is so rewarding is because it's also a continual learning process for both parties involved & I believe passionately in the huge value of teaching, taking great satisfaction in seeing my students achieve their full potential.

Privately, I mainly tutor the Sciences and Maths (which is the subject of my companies videos), with most of my students at GCSE and A-level but also ranging through to primary school. I don’t teach English itself, but do have experience overcoming language barriers having taught Maths in Kenya and Uganda, and also having had many students from overseas.

Applying for Medicine or Oxbridge?

Having studied Medicine at Cambridge, I have inside experience of both how to apply to Medicine, and how to get into Oxbridge more generally. Importantly, I also understand how difficult and daunting the whole process can be.

With their special entrance tests, multiple interviews, and top grades, applying to Oxbridge is a uniquely arduous process. Fortunately though, a little prep goes a long, and excelling at these hurdles can make you stand out from the crowd. Whether its personal statements, work experience, entrance exams like BMAT or UKCAT, or interviews - I can help you get the results you need!

Tutoring Approach

The average student spends over 1200 hours at school, and often 100’s of hours more studying at home each year. As a tutor spending 1 to 2 hours a week with each student, I can’t hope to compete with the efforts students put in outside my sessions. What I can do though is help them use that time efficiently, which is one of my main aims when tutoring.

Most importantly, I have a passion for the subjects that I teach and I try to pass that enthusiasm to my students too; as a happy student is a more productive student. I also give all of my students a copy of a mini-book/pamphlet I wrote on how to study effectively, which covers everything from creating the right environment to revise in, to how to cope with exam stress. This means that we can spend our limited time together learning and applying knowledge rather than me teaching routine revision strategies. Although of course if you would like to know more about them, I would be more than happy to explore them with you.

My approach to tutoring is to consider every student as an individual and to make learning fun. Having experience with dyslexia, I appreciate that different students struggle in different areas and pride myself in noticing when the tutee doesn't fully understand and will explain the idea from different angles until they do.
This means that my strategy varies by subject and student. Generally though, sessions include a combination of:
- Teaching new material, or recapping areas students are struggling with
- Discussing the wider applications of the material to help with memory retention and exams
- Exam specific advice, such as commonly asked questions, or definitions that might come up
- Exam practise (I have a bank of past exam papers, split by topic, for the subjects I teach)
- Regular feedback on how students are doing & what to work on, including homework
