I am a university lecturer with 9 years of experience specialising in English Literature tuition for students of all levels, including: GCSE, A level, College, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.
My approach to tutoring aims to maximise your potential, tailored towards your goals. I am warm, friendly and inclusive; my enthusiastic approach to teaching ensures that you will enjoy your sessions.
Please note that I do not offer English Language tuition.
I have a PhD in English Literature from the University of Leeds, a Masters in World Literature obtained from the University of Warwick and a high 2:1 degree in English Literature, obtained from DeMontfort University, Leicester. I am an academic who is currently working on a book about contemporary literary criticism. I regularly speak at conferences, I have published articles, and I am also an experienced editor.
My skills include:
Developing essay writing.
How to approach English exam paper questions effectively.
How to revise for English exams effectively.
How to analyse a text.
Developing effective critical writing for English literature essays.
Improving grammar, spelling and sentence structure.
For postgraduate students, I also offer proofreading services for essays, dissertations and theses. Please get in touch for a quote.
I began tutoring in October 2016. I have taught A level, GCSE, Undergraduate and Masters level students. My feedback so far has been very positive: 'friendly' 'knowledgable' 'professional' and 'explains things clearly.' I have developed the analytic skills, essay writing skills, and confidence of my students. Specifically, I have developed analytic poetry and prose skills, helped translate texts from foreign languages into English, taught effective English revision tactics, given feedback on coursework, and proofread postgraduate student's work.
I currently teach at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the English department as a full time lecturer. (Please note that I am unable to tutor students currently studying at Royal Holloway). Previously, I was a tutor at the University of Leeds (2017-19) and I also supervised dissertation students at Leeds Beckett University (2019).
Teaching at university level includes leading seminar discussions about several critical fiction and non-fiction texts, introducing students to postcolonial, race and gender theory, marking and grading assignments, developing students’ writing skills, and encouraging them to think independently.
In 2015 I completed a 6 week placement at Ernesford Grange Community School as a Teaching Assistant. I helped Year 10 students develop their GCSE coursework and worked on improving spelling and grammar with small groups of Year 8 students.
Tailored to the aims of the student (e.g achieving an 'A*' or a First) I will focus on exam paper practice, developing coursework skills and essay practice. By identifying the student's main weaknesses I will work on developing those skills, setting out objectives to achieve by the end of the hour and setting additional work if needed.
I develop activities tailored to the student's learning style and we work together to improve their analytical and writing skills. I really love literature, and this enthusiasm makes my sessions effective and enjoyable!
Travel time and fuel costs for in-person sessions are included in the agreed fee.
