I am an experienced teacher and examiner for Economics and Mathematics, covering levels from primary to undergraduate, with a special focus on secondary education. I am passionate about helping students not only achieve academic progress but also recognise and appreciate their own growth, fostering motivation and a love for learning. My unique perspective combines a deep understanding of these subjects with expertise in how they are assessed, having written exams for the UKs largest exam board. This allows me to teach both the content and the essential skills needed for exam success.
I have been tutoring since the early 2000s, beginning as a Mathematics teacher at MPW Cambridge before becoming Head of Department and later Director of Studies. As Director of Studies at CATS Cambridge, I oversaw the entire academic provision for many years. Since completing my MBA in 2015, I have also taught and examined Economics at GCSE and A Level, while preparing students for entrance tests and super-curricular courses such as the EPQ, TMUA, and ESAT. My experience spans one-to-one tutoring, seminar-style medium groups, and large webinar or lecture-style sessions. I have helped students achieve excellent results, including numerous A* grades at A Level and securing places at first-choice universities, including the University of Cambridge.
I focus on breaking subjects down not only into content but also the skills needed to grasp that content. For instance, if a student struggles with solving quadratic equations, I identify whether the issue lies with factorization, understanding the quadratic formula, or interpreting the question itself. Then, I build up these foundational skills to address the problem effectively. Continual improvement is a key motivator; I show students how they can now solve questions they once found difficult, helping them see their own progress and gain confidence.
I also emphasize diminishing repetition, gradually encouraging students toward independent study. Periodic assessments and target tracking foster responsibility and self-awareness in learning. My approach includes varied media—visual, textual, and audio—to present material in engaging ways that suit different learning styles. I believe in the 'little and often' method, ensuring steady progress and long-term retention. As a student myself, currently studying AI and Machine Learning on Coursera, I understand the demands placed on a student’s time and work to make learning as efficient and focused as possible.
