I have been a learning support teacher in the UK and Middle East for many years, working in schools and privately as a home tutor. For the past thirteen years I have been working in London. I strongly believe every student is an individual and should be taught accordingly. Some of the families I have worked with have had me work with them for over six years and in two cases, with all four of their children: I think that must be a vote of confidence!
Schools which I have recently successfully coached children for admissions exams include: City of London School for Boys, City of London School for Girls, St Paul's, City, Westminster Choir School, Highgate, Portland Place, Channing, Queens, North London Collegiate School, North Bridge, Forest, Putney, James Aleyn, St. Michael's, St. Aloysius, Haberdasher's, Camden School for Girls, Latymer and St Mary Magdalene Academy. In addition, I can offer practice school interviews for children.
I have an Honours degree in Humanities, specialising in English Literature and am available for teaching children weekday evenings and Saturday mornings and for English as a foreign language on weekdays.
I have worked as a private home tutor for over 26 years, mainly with children aged 3 - 13, or children with Special Needs/dyslexia or from expat families new to the English curriculum.
I have also taught in a total of nine primary schools in Essex, running French Clubs and in one school as their Learning Support Teacher. In Abu Dhabi I taught at the Sheikh Zayed Academy for Girls and privately at home with children of a wide range of nationalities.
My experience of working with adults on spoken and written English, includes Arab ladies in the Middle East and London. Recently, I have taught conversational English to adults from Vietnam, Russia, the Middle East, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Romania and Angola. I have also taught children from all different parts of the world: Australia, USA, Turkey, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, Germany, New Zealand and China and many local London children.
My more recent experience comprises mainly working with children undergoing selection for private and state schools in London, for 7+, 8+, 10+, 11+ and even 3+! I endeavour to make this process as fulfilling, enjoyable and successful as possible in order for children to reach their full potential.
Each student is assessed individually. I think the greatest success comes when the tutor, school and parents all work in unison with the child to consolidate what the child is learning at school. Over many years, I have built up a huge bank of materials for exploring in detail the components needed for successful exam technique for English and maths. For literacy in particular, we work in detail on literary devices writers use, such as metaphor, simile, personification and visual imagery to aid the student with their own creative writing and analysing comprehensions. We can also work on persuasive writing and other sophisticated writing skills and I offer many mnemonics and language building techniques to help children work on their originality and flair, which is crucial for exam success.
I can also offer short term programmes to help a student in specific areas they may be struggling with in maths or English, structured to what they require.
When teaching adults English as a foreign language, I tailor their needs to their lifestyle and ability. I can also offer English lessons in London whilst we explore the city and act as a chaperone and guide for visitors who wish to learn English exploring the wonderful delights and experiences of London.
