Specialist teacher in dyslexia, dyscalculia ADD/ADHD.
Does your child:
• struggle with the little joining words when reading but not the big ones?
• leave words out altogether?
• lack fluency in their reading?
• find it difficult to understand what they have read?
• seem much better some days than other days?
I trained as a teacher in 1985, although my specific interest in helping children with reading and mathematics difficulties brought me into the world of tutoring 15 years ago.
I became aware that many parents were having difficulty getting the right help for their children in school, mainly due to lack of time and specialist knowledge. However, I found that by devoting a relatively short time to these children on a one-to-one basis that they could learn to read well and that this then had a hugely positive effect on their ability to do well at school.
I was delighted recently when one of my 11 year old pupils(probably dyslexic, although undiagnosed) increased her reading age by 2.5 years in just 6 months, increased her maths scores from 35% to 75%(she could now read the questions). She was taken out of one-to-one classes at school because, as the school said, "she doesn't need them anymore".
I really enjoy tutoring because it is a pleasure to see children who have struggled at school for so long start to do really well.
I am also a trained Davis Dyslexia facilitator. The Davis system is the world's only method for correcting dyslexia. Once a child has learnt the Davis methods he/she will usually use them throughout their life.
In addition to my specialist work, I teach English and Maths to children who are not having difficulties but require some support or extra confidence in their schoolwork.
I also have extensive experience preparing children for 11+ and other entrance exams.
As well as working as a primary school teacher (teaching all ages from Reception to Y6) I have tutored numerous children. I made tutoring my full time work 8 years ago.
I regularly tutor children in the following specific areas:
Maths and English for children aged 6-11 (KS1 and KS2).
Specialist help for dyslexic/ADHD children
Specialist help for children who may be dyslexic (but are so far undiagnosed)
Parents of my pupils say that I am a very calm and patient tutor.
Every child is taught using the strategies that suit them best - I teach in a multi-sensory way which helps many of my pupils to learn well.
I work together with the parent and child to create an individual learning plan with monthly goals. This approach seems to appeal to my pupils as they can see (and colour in!) their continuing progress on a week-by-week basis.
