I received a scholarship at the age of 17 to study Piano under James Kirby at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and recently graduated with Upper Second Class Honours in July 2017.
During the four years studying, it has been extremely intense and extensive, receiving training in all aspects such as chamber music, accompaniment, teaching skills and solo performance. I was lucky enough to perform Beethoven's First Piano Concerto with the RWCMD Student Symphony Orchestra in 2016 and was a huge push forward in my development as a musician.
I worked as a Junior Auxiliary at RWCMD, assisting professors in music theory where I had the opportunity to teach and mark theory papers. It was an advantageous position for me as not only did I learn to become more fluent in my major, but also discover what kind of teacher I am. Towards the end of my contract I was appointed Deputy Piano Tutor; often taking piano lessons to teach talented young pianists with promising futures in musical performance.
I believe that each lesson taken by mentor and pupil, should be that of attention to detail and a balanced exchange of ideas and exploration. The teacher has to be knowledgable so that teaching of new material in excelling the students' capabilities is achieved; but also the teacher has to let the pupil make discoveries of their own. The epiphanic moment within the pupil is something we all strive for as it will really make a difference in their development; this is where they really begin to understand the subject in question, as well as themselves within that field.
