I am in my second year of studying Modern Languages and History at Durham University. I have always had a passion for learning about other languages, cultures and histories and as such have thoroughly enjoyed my studies. I write essays regularly and also film reviews as a hobby. Though I was never naturally good at writing and really struggle with humanities, I have developed confidence in expressing myself and my arguments well on paper. In my GCSE mock exams I did not do very well, with a D in History and Latin. However, I worked hard on writing techniques and how to structure an argument which were my main issues and managed to get 12 A*s in my actual GCSE exams.
I have both been tutored and tutored other before. I had an English tutor for a year or so when I was around 12 which transformed by writing abilities. Since then I have helped and taught my younger sister how to improve at Maths, securing her a 9 (the equivalent of a high A*) at GCSE - a huge improvement from the 6 she got in her mocks. I have also done tutoring in person for young children in my neighbourhood but have never consistently taught one pupil for a longer period of time. I look forward to seeing the progress of my pupils and am certain that they will make serious improvements.
Having been taught in various different ways and been taught different methods for learning, memorising and writing I have several basic and more advanced techniques that I can pass along to match my pupil's needs and preferences. Particularly with writing, I know how confusing and hard it can be to put ideas and arguments into eloquent and well-structured prose and in this I am certain I can guide pupils to reach better fluency and clarity levels when writing. With regards to memorising, there is no shortage of exams in the UK and as a slow learner myself I developed the best methods that allowed me to achieve 12 A*s at GCSE and 2 A*s and an A at A-Level. With parents whose native languages are German and Spanish I can not only teach Grammar well but can help pupils sound more natural and less like they learned things straight out of a textbook. If it is just oral practice that his desired I am also able to simply hold a conversation about anything in the above languages in preparation for oral exams and can help with pronunciation.
