Hi! I’m Ashton, a part-time student currently studying towards a master’s degree in Mental Health at the University of Nottingham.
I graduated with a first-class degree in Psychology in 2024 and spent most of that year conducting a research project in personality psychology, part of which will soon be published.
I have good availability and a great reputation among my students for flexibility - something that tends to come in handy in the busyness of sixth form or college! I would love to share my enthusiasm for academic study with you and prove that with the right guidance and support, getting the qualifications you need doesn’t have to be a struggle.
As a tutor, I specialise in teaching AQA A Level Psychology and have guided five students through years 12 or 13 in this past academic year. I started formal A Level Psychology tutoring after graduating in 2024 but had been involved in academic mentoring long before this.
I like my teaching to be student-lead but I will guide you in setting achievable goals for yourself and breaking down big aims into more manageable steps. The objective of each lesson will be really clear so you know what we’re working on, but also adaptable depending on how things go on the day. Importantly, I believe that the best learning takes place in a supportive, safe environment, so I strongly believe in cultivating a friendly working relationship where there is no such thing as a silly question!
My interactive and skills-based teaching style makes lessons feel more like a conversation than a lecture with lots of memory techniques informed by my expertise in educational psychology to help you learn the content. I also place a heavy focus on exam technique, incorporating activities to help you to transfer your knowledge into a perfect written answer.
This is what a standard lesson with me might look like: a few days beforehand, I’ll drop you a message to ask what you’d like to cover in our session so I can prepare accordingly. We’ll then start with a recap of what we learnt in the last lesson followed by a chat about why you’ve chosen that week’s topic. I often like to create a mindmap with students to assess what they already know- it’s usually more than they expect! I’d then talk through the content with you, encouraging interactive engagement through some gentle quizzing, real life examples and, importantly, prompting your critical thinking skills through evaluation. We might finish with some practice questions, either completed in session or as homework.
