I am a qualified science teacher with a degree from University College London and a PGCE from the University of Oxford. After teaching for five years I was promoted to Head of Department at an exceptional independent school in North London where I currently teach. I was Head of Department for six years before stepping down to take care of my two young children. I have taught across all age groups but the majority of my classes are currently GCSE and A-level. Many of my students have gone onto some of the top universities reading subjects such as medicine, engineering, and veterinary science.
I have taught various syllabi in the state and private sector. I am aware of the knowledge and skills that are required for a student to be successful in Science. I am able to help students with very low grades improve their performance as well as those with the very top grades to do even better.
When I teach I break down scientific concepts into manageable portions. Complex ideas must be broken down and each idea built on in a number of stages and too often this is not done well and pupils are left with gaps in their understanding. Many years of teaching have equipped me with the skills to adapt my teaching and tailor it to the needs of each pupil. I give my pupils the opportunity to think through their ideas and develop their understanding of the material that has been taught. Students learn best when they work through activities and answer both verbal and written questions which helps to develop their confidence. My access to a variety of differentiated resources and exam questions (I have access to many of these!) allows me to get the very best from each student. My lessons are always fun and interesting, after all, science is a fascinating subject.
I am able to tailor my approach to the pupils that I am tutoring. Some pupils may need scientific ideas and concepts need to be broken down into manageable portions before they can fit ideas together and understand the larger picture. Others pupils may understand ideas but need clarification on certain points before they develop their exam technique. A student's ability to think for themselves is key to their success and something that a teacher must develop from an early stage if a student is to excel in their examinations. Whether it is some or all of the above, I have the experience and knowledge to get the very best from your child and enable them to realise their potential in the subject.
