I offer tailor-made tutorials in English, focusing on transforming written technique and improving critical articulation and flair. I also prepare students for scholarship and university applications, honing interview skills alongside subject-specific studies. I am happy to proof read, comment on, and copy edit essays, though pricing varies according to topic and length - please contact me for details.
As a Welsh speaker, I am also happy to provide conversation tutorials for those hoping to improve their Welsh speaking skills and gain confidence.
I am a lecturer in the history and theory of contemporary art at Goldsmiths, University of London. I earned a PhD at Harvard University in the history of cinema and also hold a PhD secondary field in anthropology. I have a Masters from the University of Cambridge (Distinction), and a Bachelors from Goldsmiths College University of London (First Class with Honours).
I am based in London, having previously lived in the US, Japan and Wales. I speak English, Japanese, and Welsh.
Alongside my academic research, I write regularly for film and culture magazines including the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound, work as a freelance writer and editor, and contribute to film and culture podcasts.
I am a Lecturer in the history and theory of contemporary art at Goldsmiths, University of London. I teach across undergraduate and graduate programmes. I hold a PGCert and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (HRA). Prior to this I taught masters students at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, offering pre-thesis preparatory tutorials in how to plan and undertake a dissertation or research project. I have five years of teaching experience at Harvard University, where I taught undergraduate and masters seminars in film theory and history, general studies, and art theory. I have tutored one-to-one language and literature classes in person and online, including A-level literature for AQA and WJEC exam boards. Current clients include University students working on written assignments in Anthropology, Sociology, and English Lit. I received Harvard University's Derek Bok Certificate of Excellence in Teaching five years in a row.
I encourage an open approach to learning and teaching, informed by a sense of curiosity and enjoyment. English is a fascinating and fun subject and I aim to transmit my enthusiasm to tutees. I am patient and happy to cater tutorials to the tutee's needs. I encourage tutees to bring material with them (including online where we can share screens or pre-circulate reading material), which can range from past papers to essay questions to newspaper articles, and we can read and work through them together. If the tutee would like to improve in a particular area, such as grammar, reading, or expression, then we can advance accordingly.
I also encourage Welsh conversation tutees to bring books, newspapers or discussion topics to the tutorial so that we can work with material that is relevant and interesting for them. From this starting point I can help with fluency, pronunciation, and confidence of expression.
I am happy to proof read, comment on, and copy edit essays, offering feedback in writing or during a tutorial. Pricing varies according to topic and length - please contact me for details.
My schedule is sometimes flexible so if you don't see a time that suits you, feel free to send me a message in case.
