Having grown up just north of Bristol in the south west area, I graduated from high school with AA*A* in Biology, English and History, giving myself a relatively broad set of academic interests (including taking Japanese up to AS level finishing with an A in that). I then went on to University College London to study history, finishing with first class honours, and a commended dissertation focusing on the formation of the category of 'forced migrant' in the post-war era. I'm currently on a year out before applying for the above master's degree, spending my time focusing on ceramic work, throwing and firing a variety of pots, bowls and plates, which I started during my time at UCL and am thoroughly enjoying. Beyond that I'm doing freelance writing for a variety of arts publications in London, including the online publication Era Journal, pursuing my interest in the relationship between cultural forces and artistic production that I hope will be the central focus of a future Master's degree.
Although only recently graduating I already have 3 years of experience under my belt tutoring children in my local area aged 7-14 in a range of subjects including content required for SATs and KS3 covering mostly subjects in the humanities and helping those who needed it with spelling, punctuation, grammar and handwriting. I've also helped a few children going through GCSEs hone their essay writing techniques, focusing on increasing their fluency and clarity of style in delivering the format of essays required.
I first really felt the benefit of tuition during my GCSEs, when, struggling as any future history student might, with maths, a local tutor gave me a huge amount of support. I remember really feeling the difference between being a relatively ignored student and a child who's learning someone really cared about. From that I've found my approach has centred on creating a space for enthusiasm and curiosity in the subject to flourish, working with the student not just to advance their technical knowledge, but also to build their confidence in any subject, whether it's their natural habit or an area that they have always felt a bit out of depths in.
