Hi, it's lovely to meet you! My name is Bethany. I am a newly qualified English teacher able to support both primary and secondary students in both English literature and English language. Whether you’re struggling to understand Shakespeare, hoping to to grasp the themes of a set novel, or unsure how to do persuasive writing I am here to support any way I can.
I am DBS certified, with a GCSE in English Literature and English Language, an A Level in English Literature and a First Class Honours degree in English and Creative Writing. I have just received my Qualified Teacher Status in English literature and language and am moving on to part time supply work and tutoring as I seek work.
My experience with supporting young people has helped push my teaching beyond my years. I have spent most of the last three to four years as a children and youth pastor at my local church, providing support in group discussions and activities and supporting the young people's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare. Before this I worked part time as a musical assistant within a primary school band, supporting the flue players in their school performances. It was these experiences (and a love for English) that fueled my passion to be a teacher and support young people full time.
I provided one-to-one tutoring in 2024 for a student from Hong Kong looking to pass his English exams in order to study at a UK university. As a result of my tutoring, he successfully passed and is now studying Psychology at the University of Nottingham. This shows that I have the capability and expertise to provide effective tutoring. I have had placements in one of the top schools in the country and a faith based school with pupils from deprived backgrounds, including pupil premium, ESL and SEND students. This has given me a deep understanding of both high achieving students and those who may have difficulties that they feel are holding them back from their education, and I feel confident enough to tailor my approaches to push students higher and ensure nothing is a barrier to success.
I have experience teaching Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth, gothic texts such as Frankenstein and Dracula, graphic novels, An Inspector Calls, creative writing, viewpoint writing, power and conflict poetry, A Christmas Carol and the AQA exam specific papers and texts. I also have resources for the EDUQAS and EDEXCEL exam board through placements and my own studies within secondary school. My A Level knowledge ranges from early 19th century poetry and modern poetry to Shakespeare's Othello, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Sarah Waters The Little Stranger. Whichever exam board you are looking for, I can research and give help where it is needed.
In my classes, I can provide help with essay writing, analysing novels, plays and poetry, prepping for the speaking exam and give 16-18 year olds the confidence they need to tackle GCSE and A level exams. For younger pupils at KS3 I am happy to tailor to the pupil's needs and provide any support they require at this stage in their learning to feel confident in their speaking, reading and writing. I will provide a similar approach to primary, ensuring pupils are prepared for SATS or developed in their reading and writing ready for secondary school.
Although I am just starting out in my teaching journey, as a young adult I can provide an empathetic and personal approach as someone who can remember their own exams within secondary school! I want to ensure every child feels that their needs are understood and they can be successful no matter their ability. And hopefully learn to love English too!
