I gained a BA(Hons) degree in Economics and French from the University of Sussex in 1987 and an English as a foreign language ( TESOL) certificate from Southwark College in 1991. Having lived and worked in the US and London, I moved to Bridport from London. I am married and have a 14 year old daughter and an 18 year old son who has just left home for university. I have a keen interest in sport and music and spent
many years coaching school and Bridport youth football teams and playing drums in a number of bands.
After leaving my job as a property manager in 2008, I was invited by the head teacher of a local primary school to support children with a variety of educational needs. Having worked in the school for 18 months, I was inspired to qualify as a primary teacher and took a year long GTP. This meant that I taught for the whole year in both first and middle schools in Dorchester while I completed my training. I have taught in all primary year groups from EYFS to year 6. During the lockdown of summer 2020, I tutored a year 7/8 secondary school pupil in English, maths, geography and Spanish building his confidence for his return to school
My great strength is being able to identify what makes a child tick and so I adjust my teaching style accordingly in order to help the child fulfil their true potential. I attempt to make children feel as comfortable and confident as possible in their learning journey and so I tailor lessons according to the individual’s needs. Fun is a vital part of a child’s learning so I use humour to help pupils engage in lessons and I also try to give a reason behind the learning and what makes in relevant in a real world setting.
