I am a fully qualified high school maths teacher balancing part-time teaching with bringing up children.
I have 20 years of High School maths teaching (ages 13-18), including Further Maths A-level. In recent years, my teaching has been judged outstanding by senior colleagues. Prior to this I taught statistics as part of an access course and tutored 1st year undergraduates at the University of St Andrews while completing a PhD. I have also taught English as a Foreign Language and currently teach ballet to children and adults.
I believe that ability in maths is learned rather than genetic and that confidence is vital to success, so my approach is to encourage and to welcome learning from challenges and mistakes with the aim of developing a happy, successful and more independent mathematician. When tutoring, I identify areas of difficulty; help to develop a more secure and complete understanding of each concept; and encourage consolidation of ideas through application and problem solving.
