Hello! My name is Cara and I am a former tenant of chancery & commercial set Wilberforce Chambers. I left the Bar during the pandemic, when I was locked down abroad in Costa Rica, and changed career to become a mentor, wellness practitioner, and author (my fantasy novel "Siege" was published in December 2022).
I love fusing together my cross-disciplinary skills to support students in a well-rounded way: not just academically, but also in life. During my university years, I excelled academically but also suffered from chronic health issues, arising from stress. I learnt a lot from my own journey with health - and I am here to support you achieve your academic goals whilst ensuring that your wellbeing doesn't fall behind.
More about my professional background: I became a tenant of Wilberforce Chambers in 2017 and worked on many high profile cases - predominantly focussed on trusts, beneficial ownership disputes, and inheritance disputes, many involving cross-border/international elements. I have appeared in the High Court both in my own right, and as part of a larger counsel team.
Prior to practice, I studied Law with French Law at UCL, obtaining a First Class Degree. Alongside my studies, I worked pro-bono on an environmental law case (a complaint to the CJEU challenging England's compliance with the Environmental Impact Assessment directive), and worked at Lloyds Bank dealing with interest-rate hedging product mis-selling complaints.
I have experience teaching general university level law subjects (which I have done ad hoc since I was a BPTC student). I also have experience supporting with careers advice and application processes. As a law student, I explored both pathways (solicitor and barrister) in extensive depth - completing multiple vacation schemes at leading London law firms, and mini pupillage at over a dozen sets. I have mentored students to support them with finding the right career path - and because of my own background I am well placed to share in-depth knowledge from the professional industry.
I currently teach an English language course (which covers both creative and logical writing, written expression & presentation skills) to primary and secondary school students in Costa Rica, where I now live.
Finally, I have devoted the last three years of my life to health and wellbeing, as a meditation guide and facilitator in Costa Rica. I have counselled individuals healing from deep trauma and/or illness and this has given me a wide array of communication skills, as I engage with clients from all walks of life, with varied needs.
My approach to tutoring is varied and adaptable depending on your individual needs, as we all learn best in different ways, and have different learning objectives. As we get to know each other, I will adapt sessions to suit your individual learning style and to help you achieve your goals.
I am friendly and approachable, and also understand the importance of health & wellbeing - so I can push you in a healthy way.
As a tutor, my aim is to help you beyond merely the comprehension of course material. I will equip you with the study & writing skills you need to effectively communicate your knowledge, help you develop your critical thinking skills, and teach you how to maintain calm and focus under pressure (an important skill for exams, job interviews, and ultimately in your career).
