I am a qualified teacher with QTS/PGCE and a Masters in Education. I have always been a reader, as a child using the power of the story to take me everywhere and later as a student, educating myself and enjoying research. I had the opportunity to be a mature student when my own children were in their teens and I grasped it with both hands and I have not looked back. I am currently studying with the University of Warwick for an Educational Doctorate and of course my thesis is an exploration of how Reading for Pleasure is accessed by pupils with moderate learning difficulties. If reading is my centre, then equality is the outer layer.
Currently renovating my home so unable to tutor there. I have an Enhanced DBS.
I have specialised in detecting causes for pupils struggling to learn. Many times I have seen a mismatch between how a pupil expressed themselves verbally and how they wrote and I am experienced in teaching strategies to overcome this. I have taught in schools since 2011 becoming the Head of English and Literacy and prior to qualifying I was an HLTA for a busy English Department in a large and sometimes chaotic High School concentrating on bringing small groups of pupils below GCSE to exam success. I am also able to work with pupils with ASC (ASD), ADHD, Irlens, dyslexia, hyperlexia, and dysgraphia to name but a few of often overlooked difficulties.
I have experience of working with pupils post GCSE up to Bachelors as a tutor, coaching the use of references, planning structures and using academic writing. You can find examples of my own writing from Bachelors through Masters to Educational Doctorate on the internet.
I spent a month in summer 2014 in Athens studying for the CELTA (Cambridge) and teaching adults from Greece, Russia and Albania to speak and write English, techniques which I also used in schools to help pupils with English as an additional language.
I enjoy building relationships with my pupils so I can explore methods to help them thrive and succeed. I am evidence driven (as you would expect from someone with my research interests) and up to date with new techniques and resources.
