I am an ex teacher, who believes that traditional learning styles don't work for everyone. I am passionate about science, even though my own experience of science education was not very good. Even if science isnt a career path you envisage now, it allows you to learn processing and enquiry skills that will be invaluable in the future, and in such a scientifically complex world, appreciating what is happening around you and asking why/how/what if, is a vital life skill.
I have been teaching science for 15 years (even though my degree is in psychology and sociology), and head of department for 7 of those. I have taught whole class lessons online during lockdown, and have tutored online for 6 years.
I like to teach via big questions that then cover the curriculum in a more linked and relevant way. I teach small chunks and check for understanding in a variety of ways. If I am tutoring for additional support, this is often through exam questions which are broken down and hints and tips provided as and when required. If I am tutoring for home educated students this tends to be in a more interactive or low stakes assessment approach, building up to 1 or 2 exam style questions at the end.
