As a current Maths undergraduate at University College London (UCL), I know how tough Maths can be. However, with the right guidance and persistence, I know how liberating it can feel to understand material on a more fundamental level.
Above all, my classroom environment is one where students gain confidence, express their curiosity and deepen their knowledge. I am patient with students that have low confidence and encourage pupils to not be afraid of not knowing or getting things wrong. Rather than focusing on just 'knowing', I try to inspire students to 'understand' the concepts behind the subject.
During my A-levels, I tutored GCSE students face-to-face in Maths, creating resources and personalised lessons for our hour sessions. This taught me how to work with younger students, create a fun and comfortable learning environment and balance my studies alongside tutoring.
Outside of tutoring, I have volunteered and taken leadership roles to develop key skills and help understand students younger than me. I volunteered to take part in the Calcutta Social Project, connecting with students from Calcutta to help improve their English speaking. We had weekly one hour sessions online where we talked about a variety of everyday topics and I also created videos to further support their education. I was also House Captain and lead Puzzle Club, which gave me the opportunity to create events and work with a variety of students, from Year 7 up to Year 13. This often involved leading small group activities like dancing, arts and craft, acting and music.
My tutoring style has been developed over several years of helping students attain their academic ambitions. Lessons are tailored to each student’s pace, syllabus and needs. Be it for homework help or teaching from scratch, I am willing to create personalised resources and develop exam strategy – maximising success when the big day comes. Where appropriate, I will set additional practice questions, quizzes as well as topic and mock tests to consolidate their knowledge and track progress.
