I am not currently taking on any new students - I will have availability again from January 2025.
I recently completed my PhD with the School of English and the School of Performance & Cultural Industries at the University of Leeds. My research explored intercultural hybridity, through case studies of contemporary dance in East Africa. I also have a longstanding professional practice as a theatre director. On top of this, my background in English has gifted me with advanced spelling, grammar and syntax knowledge. I am as passionate about teaching and guiding students to achieve their very best, as I am about literature, drama and dance. I have taught students with a variety of learning difficulties, had many diverse intercultural experiences, and enjoy working with students from a wide range of backgrounds.
My teaching and tutoring experience is wide-ranging, from primary school English, Arts and Humanities in school settings, to tutoring GCSE pupils, to teaching undergraduates in English Literature and Performance Studies at the University of Leeds. I am equally happy teaching in person and online. I guided nervous 1st year BA students through an introductory English Literature course online during the early days of the pandemic. I also have ample experience in marking BA level assessments and in proofreading essays and applications.
I take a student-centred active learning approach, tailoring my tactics and resources to suit individual learning styles. I also find that taking time to understand a student's learning motivations and goals is key to ensuring a productive tutoring session. I aim to be approachable and supportive, whilst encouraging students to stretch themselves. In my preparations and planning, I also ensure that I am very familiar with the course content and assessment criteria.
