Following my undergraduate English degree at the University of St Andrews, I qualified as an English teacher in the summer of 2012.
I am friendly and patient with a passion for my subject and genuinely enjoy sharing my knowledge with those who I teach. I am dedicated to continuously improving my own subject knowledge to ensure that I am able to equip my pupils with the most up to date information and strategies to be successful communicators and achieve highly in standardised tests.
I am a qualified secondary English teacher since 2012 and have taught English Language and English Literature to all year groups from Year 7 to Year 13. I have been privileged to teach pupils of a wide range of abilities and enjoy teaching all age groups and seeing all my pupils reach their full potential. I have been successful in supporting the highest achieving individuals to achieve the highest grades preparing them for future study in English. I have also found success in enabling those pupils who need more support to achieve the 'standard' Grade 4 in English Language that college courses require. I have had responsibility in school for devising and providing intervention for Year 11 pupils who are on the borderline of achieving their expected and required grades.
Since 2013, I have been a GCSE examination marker and currently mark for AQA English Language (experience of both papers) and previously marked Cambridge iGCSE. I have taught both of these examination boards as well as Edexcel for both Language and Literature.
Primarily, my main aim whilst teaching is to help pupils realise their abilities through motivation and encouragement. In my experience, it it vital to build the confidence of pupils to give them the best chance of success. Alongside my encouraging nature, I pride myself on ensuring that the lessons I plan are appropriate, engaging and effective for the individual pupils I work with to ensure that they benefit and progress in each learning session. I take great pleasure in seeing pupils hit that 'light bulb moment' when they understand and consolidate a new skill or achieve something they have not done before. I believe that every child can succeed and, as such, I work to understand where each individual's weaknesses and insecurities lie then devise strategies which will give the child the tools to achieve their potential. In short, my approach to tutoring is one which suits the tutee; there is no single way to enable success and I use a variety of strategies to ensure each tutee receives the tuition which is most suited to their personality and learning style.
