Charlotte

Online Maths and English Teacher

Hello! I am an enthusiastic and experienced online tutor of GCSE English and Maths. I hold a doctorate in English Literature from the University of York, and have A levels in English Literature, History and Maths with Statistics. I have always had a broad interest in both the arts and sciences, and my doctoral research in particular focused on the intersections of literature and science.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 7 years experience tutoring GCSE English Language, Literature and Maths online, with a high success rate of helping students achieve their goals. I have tutored across the AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards. I also have three years experience teaching English Literature in a university setting.

In GCSE English Literature, I have experience tutoring "Macbeth", "Romeo and Juliet", "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "A Christmas Carol", "Frankenstein", "An Inspector Calls", "Blood Brothers", and both the "Love and Relationships" and "Power and Conflict" sections of the poetry anthology. If one of the texts you or your child is studying is not listed here then please do still get in touch! English Literature is my speciality and I'm happy to help across the full range of texts studied at GCSE level.

Tutoring Approach

I take a friendly and enthusiastic approach to teaching that helps students build their confidence and skill. I always begin with a first session that assesses the student's existing knowledge, helping me to get an understanding of what they're already great at and the areas where they need more support.

I believe an important part of learning is being able to use and adapt knowledge to different situations, whether an unseen poem in English Literature, unknown extracts in English Language, or a variety of Maths problems. An excellent way of doing this is through practice exam questions that students will encounter plenty of during my lessons. By encountering unfamiliar questions in a tutorial first, with my help, students are able to more confidently enter exam situations.

For success in GCSE English Literature, I also believe a thorough knowledge of the studied texts is essential. I challenge students to engage deeply and widely with the texts they study at GCSE and to have the confidence to build their own interpretations/arguments.

I always offer an initial 20 minute free online meeting before starting sessions where we can discuss needs and expectations for tuition.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with any further questions!
