I am a focus-driven person with a strong passion in meeting the specific learning needs of every student to ensure they achieve the success they deserve, that will lead to a bright future. My Chemical Engineering degree has given me a deep understanding on how mathematics and science are applied to solve real world problems, such as designing a chemical reactor to produce useful stuff like foods and drinks, toothpaste, medicines and petrol fuel. I want to use that experience to make mathematics fun and enjoyable to keep students engaged and see the meaning behind the numbers.
I have a huge amount of experience in tutoring to deliver effective and engaging lessons tailored to each student. Tutoring experience was gained and developed from working as a BP student volunteer tutor with primary 5 pupils at a school in Aberdeen. At the school, I worked one-on-one with pupils including those with specific learning needs on their mathematics such as multiplications, sums, divisions and basic algebra. Initially, I will write down on paper on how to solve the problem clearly step by step that would lead to the final solution. I would explain the reason for each step to help the student understand the process and give them an opportunity to ask any questions.
At University, I helped my fellow course mates on solving a range of mathematical tutorial problems ranging from differential equations, complex numbers and linear algebra to calculating the mass and energy balances to design an engineering process involving reactors, storage vessels and pipelines. I would write down the steps clearly on my notebook with visual diagrams drawn to help them understand on how to solve the problems.
I will first discuss with the student on what specific topics that needs to be covered and any areas of difficulties to be addressed. During the lesson, I would provide work examples with step-by-step methods on how to solve the problem relating to a particular topic. I will write down and clearly explain each step that will lead to the final solution to the problem on paper. Written questions from textbooks, revision books, problem sheets and past exam papers will then be given out for the student to work on. They will be physically printed or uploaded online depending on the form of tutoring (online, home or a public place).
Each question increases in difficulty to build up their understanding on the concepts and problem solving skills. I am very keen to help the student on any difficulties on the problems and encourage them to ask any questions regarding the topics or problems. Every student will have different levels of abilities, so it is important that I work together with the student on the problem at a suitable pace, using a customised teaching style and having patience. This will ensure they fully understand the concepts and steps to answer the question correctly. On top of that, I am happy to give out revision tips and personalised advice for exam preparation, email help, marked homework which includes more questions and examples with feedback and emotional support.
