I am an experienced tutor in both mathematics and physics. I am a mature postgraduate student at Imperial College London, studying theoretical physics. I previously had a professional career in finance and accounting for seven years before re-training in physics.
I have three years of experience tutoring and mentoring younger students in mathematics and physics at university level, focusing on key ideas and exam technique. During my professional career, I also coached many interns on completing their university applications and preparing for interviews.
Physics and mathematics provide profound answers to how our world and the universe works. Unfortunately, these subjects are often obscured in heavy notation with too much emphasis on following a formulaic approach to solving problems.
My philosophy is that every student learns and embeds knowledge in a unique way and at their own pace. Therefore, my approach to tutoring is to use a variety of learning techniques – visual and graphical, auditory, practical – to make every lesson tailored to each student. My approach it to guide students to utilise the knowledge they already have to get a deep grasp of fundamental concepts and to teach the fundamentals from many different angles. This approach allows them to solve problems by understanding every step required rather than pattern recognition. Moreover, I like to link textbook problems to real world applications which students identify rather as abstract concepts. Finally, in preparation for exams and school assignments I emphasise problem solving and a learn-by-doing approach. Tackling a wide variety of exam-style problems together, guiding the student on how to best approach each style of question, how to check whether an answer is correct, exam techniques and time management under exam conditions.
My ultimate aim is to make all students appreciate and come to love the subjects they are learning. I believe this is the best way to guarantee results.
