Hi!
I am a student who has recently completed my history degree at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). I entered this degree after studying A level History, English and Sociology at Woodhouse College. At QMUL I became involved in running the QMBL Debate Society which has improved my public speaking and my ability to make logical arguments.
Getting involved in the debate society led to me becoming a mentor who delivered debate training in schools. This has given me a passion for teaching and supporting the development of school children. I am also a keen writer and have started my own music blog as a pursuit outside of my academic and teaching work.
I have worked for two years as a mentor at schools in deprived areas where I taught students debating and public speaking skills. In my first year I mentored at secondary school level, teaching students between the ages of 12 and 15. In my second year I mentored at primary school level, teaching students between the ages of 9 and 11. This experience has taught me how to be responsible and trustworthy in a position of authority. I have learned how to safeguard and look after children of this age. It has also meant that I am organised and punctual and I am used to preparing lessons independently.
I take a soft and supportive approach to teaching. I believe that teaching should be made stimulating by bringing up thought provoking facts and discussions related to the topic being focused on. I believe it is important to revise information that has been taught in order for students to progress. I take a positive approach by looking to work with a student's skill set in order to build up their confidence. I also believe that students should be encouraged to follow their passions.
