After gaining Institute of Housing I lectured for 4 years at Park Lane College in Leeds as an evening class. I have spent most my career in the development of small industial units and then social housing. Housing development is a mixture of government regs planning etc, liasion with internal and external bodies, leadership which is often just picking people who will get on with each other, setting a brief and a budget and time scale. Overcoming problems, often creative and lateral thinking needed, reaching out to see how others tackled things. Inventing systems - one I created to sort out compulsory purchase, to make it compensatory and non compulsory thus shortening the programme.
A strange collection of systems, approaches and abandoing things that aren't going to work.
I taught at Park Lane College - Planning and Development (Housing) for 4 years as an evening class (2 hours a week).
I have a son with very low ability and dispraxia and got him reading, and writing although the latter is stll very poor. He is now 35 and sells life insurance and is very self assured.
The other son was deeply affected by his mother's death at 15 and I kept him going with my teaching and tutors. He is now 39 and a degree in IT and 10 years high level programming and SA.
I try to find out what kind of learner a student is. Some like theory and text, others need to experience it, so I make things into scenarios, I like t o create linkages in students minds so knowledge comes as a network.
I like to give out notes which contain the basics and then leave them 1/3 of page at the bottom to add their own notes/drawings/networks - anything that works for them ...pics etc
