I'm an experienced teacher and former head of science, most recently an Assistant Headteacher. I am a good communicator with patience and clarity and a firm believer in young peoples' ability to develop and learn at all levels of ability. I particularly enjoy challenging students and stretching them beyond the realms of the curriculum, but will focus on exam skills and knowledge to ensure they achieve their best outcomes.
My focus is advancement of progress and results, enrichment of science and increasing the popularity of single science GCSE and Advanced level qualifications. I have personal experience of programmes running at CERN and NASA projects. I teach all sciences from KS3 up to year 11 GCSE level, then specialise in Physics from there on. I have been head of ICT in science, coordinator of KS3, head of physics, head of science with responsibility for gifted and talented across the school and most recently assistant headteacher. I have completed the Fast Track Teacher training programme and senior leadership training and been in full time teaching since 2004. I find it the most rewarding job ever, having run my own businesses and worked in the engineering industry prior to becoming a teacher. I have a lot of real experience to draw on and find it very helpful to use context based learning to make science relative and relevant to the learner.
I will establish clear needs and goals with students and parents or carers alike and then devise a plan to lead students through to achieve the best outcomes. It is important for me to familiarise myself with the specification a tutee is being taught at school and I will match my focus to those of the scheme being examined. I will help to clarify classroom learning and support the student in the learning tasks being presented by their school teacher as well as push them further where appropriate.
