My name is Dawn and I offer private one-to-one tuition in both English and Maths. I have worked within education for many years in both a teaching and performance coaching role.
I am a highly experienced, engaging Tutor and have worked as a qualified teacher in primary schools for over 30 years. I have taught in a variety of schools, have experience of teaching in many different styles and have an excellent knowledge of the curriculum expectations for each year group. I have a B.Ed (hons) degree. I am also an accredited performance coach and until recently, have led the extensive coaching provision at a local Outstanding junior school. I am friendly, approachable and passionate about teaching. I have also been involved in Initial Teacher Training and the provision of teacher CPD for many years.
I love working with young people and where possible I try to motivate pupils by linking their individual interests to lessons.
My focus is on Primary Maths and English (up to age 11), as well as preparation for Key Stage 1 and 2 SATs, common entrance and grammar school examinations (these include 7+, 8+ and 11+). I work with children who are Gifted and Talented, children with dyslexia, global delay, working memory difficulties, and children who have missed elements of learning for a variety of reasons. I am also available to support parents and children who are involved in home schooling.
I carry out an initial assessment with all pupils during their first session with me and then plan future lessons towards pupil's individual needs and goals. I encourage question and answer sessions and give pupils the opportunity to carry out small tasks, giving continuous feedback.
As a teacher, I understand the difficulties and the stresses that can be associated with learning for some children. Using my skills as a coach, I aim to build the self-esteem, self-belief and confidence of the children that I work with. I use ‘growth mind-set’ strategies to help children to progress; not only whist they work with me, but also to develop the positive learning strategies and ‘self-talk’ that will impact their ability to learn when they are in the classroom too. My goal is to facilitate children in being confident, resilient and independent learners.
On request I also offer coaching sessions with parents to enable them to continue building these skills throughout the week in ‘Parents coaching their children workshops’.
I am generally available on weekday mornings and evenings, but can consider other times by arrangement.
Cancellation policy: Outright cancellation within 48 hours of a booked lesson will involve a 50% fee. Within 24 hours, the full fee will still apply.
