Science has always been my passion. As an undergraduate I studied Biological sciences at York University. As well as my degree I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Bath University, and a Masters degree in Education from Oxford University, both of which have greatly informed my teaching.
As well as my subject knowledge my friendly and positive approach helps pupils learn in a relaxed but structured way.
Aside from teaching I love the outdoors and spend my spare time walking, playing tennis and paddle boarding. I have three grown own children and enjoy spending time with my family and golden Labrador.
With over 20 years experience of teaching Science in a variety of school settings, I have taught pupils from Year 5 up to Year 13, with a range of abilities. I have seen the difference small group teaching can make to both pupil understanding and confidence. Outside the classroom, I have been Head of my school Science department and an 'A' level examiner for OCR which has given me a valuable insight into the way the examination process works.
My tuition sessions aim to be fun and interactive. I enjoy helping pupils prepare for examinations and working with pupils to identify which revision strategies best suit their style of learning. As examinations approach it is essential to go through past papers, to become familiar with the material, style of questions and to master the ability to answer questions concisely and accurately. The productivity of the time spent doing this, can be greatly improved by having a tutor to explain mistakes and to check understanding.
