ONLINE TUTOR WITH 10 YEARS’ CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE.
Hello, my name is Duncan and I am a qualified teacher with over 10 years' experience teaching English, and History in the independent, alternative and state sectors. Importantly, with the changes and uncertainties for students the last two years I feel it really important that my students are afforded a flexible and personalised approach to their learning.
Included with my tutoring sessions, pupils also receive:
• Access to online learning
• Homework tasks
• Access to resources differentiated to their needs
I have a passion for English and an interest in different learning styles and teaching methods which helps me to engage with the pupils I teach. Throughout my career, I have taken pride from seeing pupils I have taught progress whatever their abilities, background and learning needs. I feel very proud to see so many of my students achieve the grades they have, and also, create the opportunities they deserve for the future.
I am currently located in Brighton, East Sussex. In my spare time, I have a wide range of interests: the outdoors and nature, climbing and enjoying the coastal waters of the south coast.
I am very happy to meet to discuss a personalised learning sequence if you have any queries.
I WILL BE AVAILABLE for tutoring from August 2021.
Since becoming a secondary English teacher, I have taught a number of age groups and abilities. Firstly experiencing teaching as a TEFL teaching for six years which spurred me on to teach within a secondary school setting. I have been a lead teacher for KS3 and GCSE standardisation for English, and have been KS3 coordinator for English at two of my previous schools. This brought me in to close contact with local primary schools at KS2, and I lead the transition between KS2 and KS3 to integrate SATS learning into Year 7. Likewise, in other school settings I led Literacy sessions for students at KS3 and KS4 for pupils who needed to consolidate their progress with more focus on key skills.
Furthering this I also oversaw the gifted and talented students at KS3 with the focus of progressing them to GCSE before Year 10 so as to stretch and challenge them for the upcoming GCSE years and I am familiar with the exam boards including: iGCSEs, EdExcel, AQA, CIE and OCR.
For the last three years I have worked within the SEN sector and alternative provisions, working with students with a variety of learning needs and abilities. My previous school was a specialist ASD provision for students teaching English and Humanities. This opportunity
I really feel privileged to be afforded these experiences as my teaching approach has definitely been broadened and developed to suit the needs of the students, and adapt to often changing settings and situations.
The last times I was observed during Ofsted visits, May 2017 and February 2018 (one in a secondary mainstream setting, and more recently a SEN setting), I was judged to be Outstanding.
I am a creative teacher who prides themselves at being a very good communicator, patient and able to tailor the sessions to the needs of the students. My tutoring approach fosters confidence and motivation and I am always considerate to the academic and emotional needs of the students. I know my enthusiasm, knowledge and teaching experience has meant I feel equally comfortable tutoring students with diverse needs - whether that be academic excellence at GCSE/A-Level or basic literacy for KS2/3.
I will always look to be honest and transparent with my tutees and clients so time is not wasted. Obviously, I will tutor to the highest possible outcome but the need to succeed has to also come from the tutees. I am very open to discuss any matters about your learner's needs so please contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you :)
