A highly experienced secondary school English teacher, Head of English and senior examiner of 25 years experience. In that time I have had a 100% pass rate and I have taught in local grammar schools in both Stroud and Bristol and Wycliffe College teaching up to A Level. Specialist areas: GCSE, A level, and Key Stage 3. I also have extensive experience of teaching SEN, and students with autistic profiles.
Given my experience and specialist knowledge, my rates are high; however, my students gain new confidence in their ideas and I can help them to do better than they think is possible.
I am able to quickly analyse a student's work and develop an appropriate course for them to ensure they maximise their strengths as well as overcome their difficulties. I have had considerable success with helping students develop confidence with all aspects of writing and completed an MA thesis in encouraging boys to read. I have also supported over 200 students through A level coursework and I have had particular success helping students improve their essay writing. I have a vast amount of experience with all the various examination boards and have examined and moderated on most of them.
I have two of my own children (at a local grammar school) who I have supported through education with excellent results (all grade 9 and A*s) and I have a supportive and understanding approach.
I also write my own resources which are sold to other teachers to support the teaching of both GCSE and A level English.
Much of my work has come through word of mouth, so many of my references are not attached to this site. Here's what some parents have said:
Elaine is teaching my home-educated fourteen-year-old, the Year 10 and 11 GCSE syllabus in English Language and English Literature. She is an excellent tutor. She is professional, experienced and organised. She very quickly assessed my child's learning style and adapted her own to suit. She is patient, kind, encouraging, understanding, supportive, and willing to go the extra mile. I have no hesitation in recommending Elaine. She is a real asset, and I feel very fortunate to have found her to tutor my child. (Jan)
Not only is Elaine an extremely professional, knowledgeable tutor, she is also one of the nicest people that you could hope to meet. My Son really looks forward to his lessons with Elaine, plus he has a lovely bond with her.(Which we've never experienced with other tutors). Elaine always arrives promptly and prepared with well-planned lessons. She is very patient and has been extremely flexible with us. We hope to work with Elaine for many years to come!

Elaine tutored Molly for 2 years in English literature ALevels whilst she was at Stroud High School. She immediately established a good relationship with Molly which was warm and friendly as well as getting down to business. Molly looked forward to her tutoring every week and Elaine helped to improve her competence as well as her confidence in her ability. In particular Elaine identified early where help was needed and helped Molly to address specific issues, for example, using text examples to illustrate her points in essays. Elaine provided extra resources and went above and beyond the tutoring to help. Molly always regarded Elaine as a safe place to discuss and address her concerns about her essays and it built her confidence enormously. Molly really needed this as a contrast to some of the Stroud High teaching. If you can get a space for your child- grab it!! (Alison)
Elaine is a brilliant English tutor. She is encouraging, motivating and challenging in equal measure. Eliza benefited hugely from the time she spent with Elaine, gaining in confidence and ability both for exam papers and coursework. (Chandra)
Elaine is such a great teacher .. she reignited my daughter's love for and interest in literature when she had become stale due to having to produce formulaic essays in preparation for A level. Elaine is warm and engaging and able to enthuse students through her own self evident passion for English. She has a calm and caring manner and truly seems able to get the most from her students. My daughter looked forward to her lessons with Elaine. I highly recommend her. (Wendy)
Elaine helped our son to achieve an A* in both his English Language and English Literature GCSEs. He said he learned more in one lesson with Elaine than a whole year at school. She really knows her stuff and has a gift for encouragement. We highly recommend her. (Sarah)
Our daughter was achieving only a D grade before she had tuition with Elaine. She was so encouraged and helped by the lessons, that we decided to have two hour sessions a week and it really paid off. Our daughter went on to achieve two grades higher at A level and secured her top choice university. We can't recommend Elaine highly enough! (David and Arlene)
Elaine's A level English tuition helped our daughter with her coursework choices and with all her A level texts. Elaine really prepares her lessons and we were so impressed with how much more confident our daughter became in writing essays. Thank you! (Liz)
We came to Elaine after trying another tutor who didn't seem to know the texts at all. The difference with Elaine was immediate. Our son has gone on to a Russell Group University and was singled out for gifted extension work in school not long after starting lessons. Before this he was lacking confidence and unable to express himself. We are so grateful to all the help Elaine provided. She went over and above and made our son feel more excited about academic study again! (Paul)
Elaine is an exceptional and knowledgeable tutor. She helped my son for only a couple of sessions in order for him to have more confidence for his approaching A Level exam. It was obvious she did a great amount of preparation for these sessions and she gave him these flash cards and other photocopied resources for him to use. I would highly recommend Elaine.

Elaine has been really great with Sam, kind and encouraging. His confidence is improving and he is engaging better with the work.
(Diana)
Excellent tuition. My son is very pleased with how lessons are progressing and his grades have quickly improved.

I have a 2:1 degree in English and American Literature from Kent University and a PGCE in secondary English from Oxford University. I also studied at the University of Bath and completed an MA thesis in Education. I can also be found online: www.englishtutoringonline.co.uk
I have taught for 25 years in mostly selective grammar schools and I am skilled in developing students who may lack confidence in English whilst having skills elsewhere.
During my 25 years teaching English I have coached students with dyslexia and autism, some going on to achieve national English prizes for their writing. In addition, I have supported those with more general difficulties with expression, punctuation, grammar, essay writing, and analysis skills. I have a particularly good breadth of experience in both GCSE and A level texts, and I am well versed with all the new syllabus requirements. As I am still in teaching, I am currently working for examination boards and will be able to advise students on where they are not meeting the exam criteria.
In my 25 years in teaching, I have 100% pass rate at GCSE including students who started with a very low predicted outcome and poor confidence levels. As a Head of English, I prepared the course outlines for a team of teachers with considerable success and enjoyed all aspects of encouraging students to achieve their potential. My particular focus in managing a busy English Department was on ensuring both staff and students felt confident and facilitated to work. I have seen students flourish in my care and I am particularly skilled at enabling independence and a can do attitude. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and it has been my life long vocation and pleasure to see students develop enthusiasm for language and literature and going on to become fluent and engaging writers and avid readers.
If you are looking for long term tutoring (6 months or more) or a home schooling arrangement whereby I teach the entire course of study to you, then that is something I have a great deal of experience in.
I am keen to work with students to improve either language or literature or indeed both at the same time. The tuition I offer will ensure that the student is no longer lost and forgotten in a large class and unable to access the examination criteria. I will ensure that the student becomes organised, focused and has a sense of achievement enabling them through focused exercises and support to achieve their potential at GCSE or A level.
I am happy to coach students through all aspects of the A level course, whether that is for the examination or the coursework element. I have had particular success with coursework in the past and as a senior moderator of A level coursework, I have a vast amount of experience in developing a student's approach to this task. My current A level students benefit from close analysis of their essay style and academic teaching to develop their thinking and planning skills. My A level experience covers both Language and Literature.
I have also examined for the International Baccalaureate and am happy to tutor students who are pursuing this course at advanced level.
Having taught in the private sector, I appreciate the high expectations that parents have when it comes to seeking the best educational outcomes for their children.
