Hi I'm Emily! I'm a final year PhD student at the University of Oxford studying Genomics, for which I do a mixture of lab work and computational biology. For my undergraduate/masters degree I studied Chemistry with Biology and Mathematics. I love getting involved with public engagement activities and scientific podcasting, it's great to be able to share my passion for science and maths to inspire the next generation of budding scientists!
Having been through the GCSE/A-level school --> university process relatively recently I understand what it's like to balance multiple subjects and extracurricular activities. Whilst it is hard work, it should also be fun and rewarding! I am available for online tutorials in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics for both Year 7-9, GCSE and A-Level students.
I have been tutoring for 2 years now through First Tutors, as well as having tutoring family and friends online through their A-level and GCSE studies, which was both fun and rewarding to see their improvement and help them to achieve realise their potential and achieve their goals. During my PhD I have also been involved in public engagement activities in which we teach our scientific research to children and families at science festivals, this is not only great fun but also a good exercise on tailoring the teaching to different audiences.
The biggest downfall with GCSEs and A-Levels is the huge quantity of material that is often rote learnt. For me, tutoring is all about taking the time to understand how and why, to consolidate the knowledge of each topic. I can tailor sessions to suit the students needs, whether it is to focus on a particular topic, or work on the best ways to approach exam paper questions. I always have in mind that the ultimate goal is the final exam and will work closely with the exam syllabus to ensure a well rounded knowledge of the subject.
