My name is Emily, and I am a qualified teacher of English. I live in Colchester with my husband and have worked in state schools in Essex and Suffolk and lectured at the University of Essex.
I love tutoring because I enjoy watching children and young people work towards and meet their potential. I understand the pressure of exams for young people today and that confidence is one of the key factors for exam success. To build a student’s confidence I ensure regular exposure to a range of different exam questions whilst also taking a person-centred approach, working hard to ensure my lessons are tailored to the individual and their academic needs; in my experience this is how children learn best. As part of the tutoring process, I regularly liaise with parents to discuss how lessons are going and feel that an open dialogue is key to good learning.
I qualified as an English teacher in 2015 and since then I have taught English to both KS3 and KS4 students, specifically, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, An Inspector Calls, poetry and all components of the AQA English Language paper. I am also able to teach the Edexcel Literature and Language papers at GCSE Level.
For students preparing to sit the 11+ I can offer all components of the English section of the CSSE format exam paper, specifically, comprehension, applied reasoning and creative writing. I can also tutor English skills to students preparing to sit their SATs.
Finally, I can offer A Level Sociology to both Year 12 & 13 students. I am able to teach Families and Households, Education, Research Methods, Crime and Deviance, Media and Beliefs.
Please note, if tutoring takes place in my home the charge will be £30 an hour, if you would like the tutoring to take place in your home the charge will be £40 an hour.
An organised and consistent approach that takes into account the needs of the student. I reflect after every lesson and assess how best to teach an individual, adapting activities and subject content where necessary.
I endeavour to make subject matter as interesting as possible whilst also challenging the student with regular exam practice.
