Science is in my blood! To me, science is not just an academic subject, but an approach - a way of looking at things. We all have the ability to be scientists, and yet science lessons at school often do not capture the attention or imagination of all students. The reasons are many, and I won't go into them here - but if I can infect others with a bit of my passion then I will be happy.
I left the teaching profession in April 2019 for many reasons, the main one being to set up my own business. But I miss teaching! I am currently working as a supply teacher and tutor.
I have over 20 years’ teaching experience of secondary science and PSHE (13-19 year olds), to all age and ability levels - mostly in a large, successful, high-achieving state school in Newcastle upon Tyne. My specialist subjects are Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I offer Biology (and to a lesser extent Chemistry) to A-level. During my teaching career I also mentored numerous EPQ students, as well as trainee and newly-qualified teachers.
My research background is in Marine Biology, Ecology and Ecotoxicology.
In my business life I also coach and guide business owners and leaders, helping them to get the best out of the people in their organisations.
Every person is a unique individual, with their own preferences for learning and teaching styles. For that reason, my approach is always bespoke and tailored to the needs and preferences of each tutee. My initial consultation involves an exploration of your current situation, where you would like to be, and how best we can reach that destination together. I can help with subject knowledge, confidence, understanding and exam technique., but most of all, I aim to bring some enjoyment to science!
