I hold a First Class BA in Classics from Durham University and two Masters degrees in Classics, from Durham University (distinction) and Edinburgh University (distinction). I have also studied for 3 years towards my Ph.D. at Cambridge University, with a dissertation on philosophical methodology of Plato and Aristotle (not submitted). Both of my academic references come from Cambridge University.
I have expert knowledge of Ancient Greek and Latin languages and am passionate about helping others to access the worlds of Ancient Greece and Rome. I offer tuition A-Level and University students, as well as graduate/adult learners with diverse learning aims.
I have completed a training course for Classical languages tutors in Cambridge University Faculty of Classics. This has helped me to refine my teaching methods and equipped me for teaching Latin and Ancient Greek at all levels.
I have taught individual tutorials for Classics students at Cambridge University. This involved setting, marking and discussing coursework essays. I helped students to develop their understanding of the subject and improve their essay writing skills.
My method of teaching Greek and Latin is a combination of the necessary grammar work with learning about the wider social, religious, and philosophical context. I also teach students to identify and appreciate rhetorical devices as well as different stylistic registers used by classical authors. This equips the student not just for translation, but also for writing essays and commentaries on the passages.
Of the range of topics covered by Classical Civilisation my particular strengths are: Homer and Virgil, Greek Religion, Invention of the Barbarian, Greek Theatre, Democracy and the Athenians.
I give students detailed written feedback on their essays. The feedback focuses on style, paragraph structure and developing a coherent overall argument. In addition to giving written notes, I like to discuss the students’ essays in person, giving them an opportunity to reflect on their written work and explain their ideas and linguistic choices.
I create personalised sessions that address the individual needs and learning aims of each particular student. I understand the importance of a friendly learning environment that builds confidence and makes studying enjoyable.
