Hello I'm George! I'm a recent chemistry graduate from Durham University! Science has always excited me but my favoured passion for chemistry began after a week working with a research team in Liverpool focussing on nanomaterials. I carried this experience throughout my degree and it inspired my dissertation on borophene nanosheets (2D boron).
Other than chemistry, I am an avid rugby player and captained my team in the final year of my degree. My other hobbies are listening to music, playing chess and hanging out with my friends.
I have tutored three students over the past six months, giving me sixty hours of tutoring experience. I did maths and chemistry at A-level and although I opted to do chemistry at university, I took optional modules in maths throughout the course.
From my experience in tutoring and my own experience within education, I recognise the key attributes to a positive tutoring experience. I highly value the understanding of concepts within the subject, a deep understanding of a subject allows the student to solve problems, answer exam questions and explain concepts. This is much more beneficial than memorising and reciting information. To help and prove the student’s understanding, at the start of each lesson I ask the student to explain what they had learnt in the previous lesson, in addition to this I set small questions with different levels of difficulty which are parallel to questions of their exam board.
I acknowledge that every student learns in a different manner and tailor my lessons to accommodate for their preferred learning styles/methods. During my years at school and college, I’ve overheard many times “what’s the point in learning this?” or “I’m never going to use this again”, resulting in a lack of interest and passion for the subject. Therefore, to combat this issue I like to show students examples of how the content they are learning is used in research and real-life.
