Glasgow-based and specialising in National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher English, I have extensive experience in writing and editing in publishing and journalism. This has made me aware of the necessity of writing quickly, accurately and well. Those qualities are essential in putting together portfolios for English courses and for sitting examinations.
I have been tutoring English since 2010 and have helped hundreds of tutees improve their grades and understanding of English, sometimes to a level that they might have previously believed they were incapable. Every year, approximately 85-90 per cent of my tutees achieve an A; the remainder over-achieve to attain much-welcomed Bs and Cs. In 2021, almost everyone attained an A at Advanced Higher, Higher and National 5 level. In 2022, approximately 90 per cent of my tutees achieved an A. Without banging my own drum too much, when the results arrived, I received acclamations such as, "We were incredibly lucky to have you and really appreciate it. You've been amazing!" "Thank you so much for all your help. Invaluable!" "Thank you very much again for all your time, efforts and patience.""You are a miracle worker!" In 2024, comments included. "We can't thank you enough for all you did and especially in giving him the confidence, where the school very much lacked" and "We are astonished, surprised and delighted at how much you were able to help in such a short time." Again, in 2024, my tutees all passed and again there was a preponderance of As in those passes. In 2024, comments included, "We can't thank you enough for all you did in helping him and especially giving him confidence, something in which the school very much lacked. We are delighted." and "Amazing! Thank you again for everything."
I take an efficient but relaxed approach. It is important to instill confidence in the tutee, especially if they find English tricky. It is also important that they work to a schedule. Through experience, I know how to adjust my approach to the needs of each tutee.
