I am an English graduate and Celta qualified hlta and left my job of 15 years 3 years ago where I ran a department supporting students who had English as a second language in a secondary school. Before that I worked in a primary school working with year 6 students preparing for their SATs. Prior to my time in education I worked as an accountant in practice but also in the logistics industry.
I have over 20 years experience working in schools as a higher level teaching assistant and have worked in both Primary and Secondary settings. I had my own department in a secondary school where I delivered an IGCSE for students with English as a foreign language, but I was also required to support all areas of the curriculum. My prior training in accountancy meant I was able to support Maths to GCSE level. Since leaving my job in the school I have worked with the post Covid National Tutoring Program at both Primary and Secondary levels and I also have a small private portfolio of students where I tutor Maths and English privately. These range from KS2, through KS and KS4 to adult learners.
I prefer to tutor face to face as I believe this is the only way to establish the individual needs of a student. It also means I can be very flexible in my approach and can allow the student to build confidence as they learn. This has been particularly important with the post covid cohort many of whom are struggling with 'holes ' in their learning, but is also relevant for many adult learners.
