I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2023, and since then I have worked with a variety of students inside and outside of a school setting. I aided in developing their understanding of maths and helped them gain confidence when working independently and approaching exam questions.
I have experience tutoring online and working with students in schools. I have worked with students settling into secondary school in year 7 all the way up to students in year 13 about to take their A-level exams, and so I have been able to look at the educational journey a student takes as they progress through secondary school.
I have experience working with students with a wide range of abilities, including SEN students.
I host my tutoring sessions on Microsoft Teams and I use the Microsoft Whiteboard app to present the content for the session.
To start with, I hold a consultation session. This includes a discussion about which particular topics the student wishes to cover and how I can best support them, as well as a brief discussion about any additional educational requirements the student may have. I will encourage the student to send me resources such as past exam papers they’ve completed, so that I can get an accurate idea of exactly which areas the student needs to work on.
I tailor my approach to individuals' needs and I create learning materials specific for each student to encourage engagement. For example, I have tutored a student who enjoyed playing rugby and so a lot of the material we worked through was applied to the sport. These materials focus on areas where the student needs to work on and include lots of practice questions.
I aim to foster a student-led environment, where the student is encouraged to think about practice questions carefully and explain their reasoning in order to improve their problem-solving skills. I build up to this gradually over the course of a few weeks or months, starting with sessions where I lead and provide lots of active support and working towards sessions where the students is encouraged to do more independent thinking and problem solving, with me being there to point them in the right direction when they need it.
For SEN students, I tend to provide more active support and I typically spend a bit longer on each topic to give the student time to properly digest the material.
I encourage students to be working through their course material outside of sessions and I am more than happy to mark revision questions and practice papers completed by the student in my own time and provide feedback in sessions.
