I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) science course at London Metropolitan University in 2006. Additionally, I have BSc (Honours) degree in Biochemistry from the same university.
My teaching experience has covered both Key Stage 3 and 4 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and in addition to teaching up to Key stage 5 in Chemistry.
I have used and continue to use the National Curriculum and various specifications (OCR, EDEXCEL, AQA) to prepare effective lesson plans which make my lessons interesting, informative, concentrating first and foremost on effective teaching and learning.
A suitable, balanced, challenging, stimulating and creative curriculum is essential in developing children’s skills, knowledge and understanding. These all highlight personalised learning. My time in school has developed my philosophy of valuing each child as an individual, as well as part of a community. I aspire to give children as many learning opportunities and experiences as possible in order to engage, motivate and prepare them for future life. I make lessons as varied and active as possible utilising group, class, pair, drama and individual activities. I implemented the four part lesson as I feel this is the most effective style and allowed for different assessment methods; peer assessment being one of them.
Progression needs to be planned for; children in all my classes make excellent progress because I always share learning objectives and success criteria with them. Knowing exactly what is expected and how they can achieve allows children to focus more clearly on tasks. This also facilitates effective self and peer assessments, as there are clear criteria and objectives to assess against, encouraging children to take more responsibility for their own learning.
To be a good science teacher of course, one needs to be able to cut the mustard as an individual classroom practitioner. I have a track record of helping my pupils to achieve excellent results in their GCSE and all my Years 11 and 10 have been achieving outstanding grades.
Teaching and Learning: I planned and taught topics in Biology, Chemistry and Physics according to the national curriculum requirements and various examination boards specifications (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) with the aim of meeting the long term needs of the various categories of students in the class. I use a variety of methods in teaching to accommodate the varied learning styles and needs of my students. I also challenged the more able students through directed questioning or use of extension activities both of which involve higher level thinking. In both Schools I taught children in both setted and mixed abilities.
