Hello, my name is Yiannis, and I am a medical doctor currently working at the Homerton University Hospital in London, originally from Greece but trained in London. I graduated from Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry with merits in all my academic years. I have obtained an iBSc in Neuroscience with distinction by Barts and the London and I have a special interest in dermatology and anatomopathology having obtained a PGDip in Clinical Dermatology with distinction by Queen Mary University of London.
I have been teaching and tutoring one-to-one, small groups and large audiences over the last 8 years, including medical students from multiple medical schools across the UK: Barts and the London, UCL, Imperial, KCL and SGUL. I have also had the pleasure of preparing high school students with their university applications and interview preparation obtaining offers from their first medical school choices.
For the last 5 years, I have been writing multiple choice questions (MCQs)/single best answer (SBA) questions for one of the most popular online revision question banks having received very good feedback about the high-quality questions delivered.
I am a passionate tutor dedicated to achieving the highest potential for my students and improve and reflect on my teaching/tutoring practices.
I am devoted to my students, always taking the extra mile for them in order to accomplish their goals and dreams. Over the last 8 years, I have more than 1500 hours of tutoring experience, both in person and online. I had the pleasure of teaching students from several universities both in the United Kingdom and Greece. I have helped students with their university applications, personal statements and interview practice, obtaining offers in many top UK universities. I have also taught students from all academic years from first year to final year medical students and I always aim to teach within the university up-to-date curriculum.
Throughout my university years, I was involved with regular delivered seminars in anatomopathology, basic sciences, general medicine and general surgery as a teacher in the Medical Education Support Society (M.E.S.S.) as well as helping students with their OSCE preparation through the Clinical Learning and Associated Skills Society (C.L.A.S.S.). During my fourth year at medical school, I was hand-picked by Professor Dame Parveen Kumar to present with her the yearly lecture on liver anatomy and pathology demonstration on the Year 3 cohort of Barts and the London Medical School.
I have been selected a clinical mentor and bedside tutor for many different UCL medical students in the clinical placements the last two years, helping them understand important pathological and clinical concepts to ace their exams. I also had the honour to be appointed as the undergraduate teaching lead for Infectious Diseases for 4th year medical students of UCL during my time working at Royal Free Hospital in London.
I have also organised and developed an online/virtual teaching programme for final year medical students to pair them with current doctors to help them with their OSCE practice for their final exams, I also participated in the scheme and delivered weekly online teaching sessions by creating my own up to date OSCE scenarios.
My teaching sessions have received very positive feedback: 5/5 stars in finding the sessions useful and relevant to the curriculum, 4.94/5 stars in making the session clear and easy to understand, 4.98/5 stars in a well-planned and organised session. Some previous comments include: “Yiannis made complex topics seem very straightforward to understand”, “Such an interesting way of making biochemistry topics enjoyable and fun” and “Yiannis was a knowledgeable tutor with effective communication skills that made the revision session easy to comprehend”.
I am a very friendly, enthusiastic and patient tutor that emphasises in creating a welcoming teaching environment that you can develop your knowledge through positive reinforcement. I have developed an interactive and flexible tutoring style, using evidence-based techniques to enhance your learning (active recall, interleaving and scaffolding) that is eventually tailed to your needs. I have gathered very positive feedback on my teaching techniques and approach so far, but I continue to reflect and improve my practices by attending and participating in teaching courses to stay up to date.
I offer one-to-one support primarily online but happy to discuss in-person tuition if needed. For the online sessions, I use Skype, Microsoft teams or Zoom, meaning that the lesson can happen anytime and tailored to your needs. I am more than happy to be reached over the phone/WhatsApp/email between sessions to monitor your progress and adjust my teaching in accordance with your needs.
