Tutoring Experience

I have taught secondary school and university students in group and one-to-one settings, online and in person:

Tutoring Approach

I challenge students to reach their own conclusions, directing their enquiries and providing information as needed. My methods enable students to see that they are able to learn and adapt no matter how successful or unsuccessful they feel at the subject to begin with. This leads students to develop the detailed knowledge and independent thinking skills required to achieve the best results possible.

A typical lesson for Latin or Greek might run as follows:

I start by reviewing any homework (set by either me or the school), to ground students' understanding so that exam revision will be easier and more enjoyable. For set texts, the student translates and I facilitate by supplying vocabulary and flagging up difficult grammar. Questions are encouraged as we work together to help the student feel confident in their own ability.
My approach to language is rigorous and I believe that memorisation is an invaluable tool, but there are many ways to go about this in an engaging way that gives the student a real understanding of what is going on.
