My name is Isobel and I am a tutor and freelance writer. I studied English Literature at Warwick University up to Masters level. Their Warwick Writing programme meant I received specialist teaching in essay structure and academic writing as well as being taught at their world renowned Shakespeare Institute. I was also awarded a place on the Soho Theatre Young Writers course after graduation and had an artist residency at The Roundhouse in Camden which has influenced my creative writing teaching alongside my academic studies.
I have been teaching for seven years, preparing students for 11 plus exams at some of the top London schools including; Godolphin and Latymer, St Pauls, City of London, Emanuel, LEH and Putney High. I also teach GCSE and A level across the exam boards, have helped students go from level 6-9 and continue onto study English at University.
I really think tutoring is about unlocking skills and talents that may otherwise be overlooked and I always tailor each session to the individual style and idiosyncrasies of the student. I want the lessons to encourage a joy of literature, engage students with inferences surrounding stories and character and incite a sense of self possession and independent thought when they approach textual analysis. I think it is important to relay creative ideas in clear and concise ways and I provide students with methods for structuring their writing, defining terms and creating a thesis statement that they can follow through the course of the essay.
