My name is Jake, and I've been teaching English and Creative Writing for nearly 5 years. I've taught a wide range of students, from those prepping for 11+ exams to undergraduate English Literature students. However, the bulk of my experience concerns preparing students for GCSEs and A Levels in English. I hold a BA, MA, and PhD in English Literature and Creative/Critical Writing, and I am a published poet active within the literary scene in East Anglia. I enjoy positive and good-humoured relationships with my students, and I cater to all needs and abilities - even those who can't stand the subject but want to do their best for the GCSE exams!
I have been tutoring for 4 years, working with students preparing for: 11+ exams, GCSEs, A Levels, and students working at undergraduate level at the University of East Anglia. I have worked with students in private schools, comprehensive schools, and SEN schools. I have lots of experience working with students who are not in a mainstream school setting for a myriad of reasons. I have experience tutoring students with complex needs and those who are recipients of EHCPs.
I pride myself on being a good-humoured, friendly, and approachable tutor. I believe in fostering a collaborative tutoring environment in which lessons are built around each students' goals and needs - no two students are the same, and we all work differently. When it comes to 11+, GCSEs and A Levels, I take an exams-focused approach, helping students understand what examiners are looking for, how to structure your writing, and how to get as many marks as possible. In exam season, I help students prepare revision timetables for use outside of lesson time.
I am naturally passionate about English, but not overbearing - I know all too well that for many students, English is a necessity rather than a joy! Everyone's educational journey is different, and a constructive understanding of this fact is central to my ethos as a tutor.
